A question I was asked at an interview for a college writing program which is to take place over the summer:

What would you say if someone told you that fiction writing was unimportant?

I'd agree, but I'd remind the person that a lot of it's entertaining to read.

Is a punch in the face acceptable? But... it's entirely important. The exercise of our minds into a literary fantasy is a gift!

Well, I think they were looking for something more along the lines of why it's important. But whatever.

I would ask them their thoughts on the importance of entertainment and sanity. Upon art. Jusging by that statement I would be led to believe that that person is a workaholic who believes in an efficent life style. Any aprticular work is unimportant, but fiction writing is essensial.

It allows us to view the real world from an entirely different perspective, spreading wisdom, satire, and more through clever stories!

it isn't important... you don't have to read fiction at all if you don't want to. It's just a fun thing to do.

fiction is a medium of reading, one more accessabile to the masses, which increases literary skills and general growth in the arts.

it inspires creativity and helps our culture as a whole.

originality and imagination would be stunted without fiction as well, creating little room outside of the monotiny of everyday life, and no vision for an ideal world.

you don't have to shit in a toilet either, but that doesn't make it culturally acceptable.

So if it isn't informative it isn't important? Are you saying that we can't learn anything from fiction? Without fiction we would have no William Shakespeare, with him we would loose many words from the English language.
