I still don't get it. So if I say "So I was in line behind this girl who was talking a lot on her cell phone and it was annoying," that's being sexist? Just mentioning something is enough to make it unacceptable?

This is fodder for an outside conversation, or perhaps a different thread.... if you still don't see. But I will say this:

Your point is well taken. However, "this girl" is not the same as saying "this BLACK girl." You could have said that some family was laughing throughout and annoying you. But that it is was some BLACK family obviously has added significance to you, or else you wouldn't have mentioned it. And apparently you thought it had added significance to those of us reading your post.

It is a subtle difference but it means the world to a lot of people (and no, I'm not talking about political correctness). Think about why you had to point out that they were black, and not just "some family." If there is a genuine answer then my hat is off to you.

This thread is about the Transformers movie, and so it should remain. If it could be split off to encompass this new topic, all the better. I was just responding to the previous posts.

No, Matts, you're being an idiot, and DJ is absolutely correct. DJ identified the race of the family that annoyed him, and the choice to take it one step further and to call it racist is your fault.

How do I figure? If you deny the fact that being annoyed by a black family is profoundly different from being annoyed by a white family you are an idiot. That's not to say that the level of annoyance is any better or any worse, it's different, and to this forum which I will say is at least 1375% white (with sprinkled Hispanics) it's as important a detail as any.

it was just a detail in his story, i'm with ethan/deej on this one. i saw the movie the other day and was annoyed by some fat little white kids. i can say that and not sound racist because you can use that to picture the kids and to imagine them and how they annoyed me a little better. ethan's right, whether or not the annoyance is worse isn't what he's saying, it's just that they're different.

yeah, i tend to agree with matts here too, t'b'honest, though i don't think it's much of anything beyond a product of how one was raised and who we grew up alongside and as far as i'm concerned it's not that huge a deal. there's always a weird level of familiarity with different people here and there. there's only so much we can control: who we grew up around and what we grew up as isn't really in that sphere. the less of a deal we make about it, as far as i'm concerned, the better. i don't think it's really necessarily a fault or anything, or a huge fantastic big deal.

i was accused of being a racist a while back by some anonymous fuck from camp hamp when i said that their zine was poorly designed and questioned a little bit of the content--a minor issue in it really concerning etymology, and when i said i didn't think about race that much the fucker said "you don't have to think about it 'cause you're white"--white privelege and such, or so i'm told--and asked if all my friends were white gamers. :/ (they've never been exclusively either.) that whole dealio including my eventual response is up in here. my school, despite being so-called progressive, isn't actually very open to discussions about racism... it's pretty pathetic. though being accused by anyone of being racist really sucks.
